CfDC Minutes — April 4, 2012

Announcements:

  • Testing Accommodation Center’s Open House was very successful.
  • Flash Mob on the Diag organized by Adena and ADACO was very successful and raised awareness, as intended.
  • Neubacher Award and Certificate of Appreciation nominations are currently being solicited!
  • Investing in Ability has as its theme 5 A’s in AA (art/architecture/accessibility/accommodation/attitudes); more information to follow.
  • Paratransit options for UM guests who need this transportation are being investigated; scarcity of accessible hotels downtown was discussed; there are outlying hotels with accessible rooms, however.
  • Mass General Hospital praised UMHS for sign-language set-up phones for deaf patients/visitors.
  • Center for Independent Living (CIL) Advocacy Workshops on 4/10 and 4/17 are open to all.
  • Annual CIL Spring Gathering breakfast on Friday, May 18 at Kensington Court Hotel 7:30 am until 9 am.
  • Tours of CIL given on 1st and 3rd Wed of month at 5:30 pm.

Presentation by Thomas M. Hoatlin, Jr. (Tom)

Tom described training for his new position as Midwest field representative for the Christopher Reeve Peer and Family Support Program, a nationwide peer-to-peer mentoring program. Tom has actually been doing peer-to-peer mentoring for 20 years with spinal cord injury and other patients in our local area. Now he will be spending some time in Chicago and other venues, as well. Remote mentoring is also available via Skype and i-Chat. Visit the Christopher Reeve website for available resources and further information.
