CfDC Minutes — March 2, 2016

Jack said a few words describing the month of March. Introductions were made around the table. Our special guests were welcomed to the meeting.

Jack was congratulated by the Council members on being just awarded the Carol Hollenshead Award for Excellence in Promoting Equity and Social Change.

Attorney Jason Turkish described the history of the situation with Metro Airport vis-a-vis Michigan Flyer/Air Ride (Indian Trails) with two lawsuits in Federal Court, a failed attempt at a compromise and the Airport not living up to its promises. The current situation is that as of March 15th, there will be a special stop for disabled individuals and another stop for the rest of the passengers. Council members who are interested in acting and providing comments can either appear in person at a meeting at the Airport on March 16th at 2 pm or at an AAATA Public Meeting in the AADL on March 17th at 6:30 or else write to: Matt.McGowan@wcaa.us (no later than 4:30 pm on March 4th). Rosemary Ziemba presented information on the Disability Integration Act, a civil rights legislation introduced by Senator Charles Schumer to address the fundamental issue that people who need long term services and supports (LTSS) are forced into institutions, losing their civil rights. This builds on ADAPT, which works to end institutional bias and provide seniors and people with disabilities home and community-based services as an alternative.

Paul Guttman provided information about a mobile app for work requests with GPS identification, one in which a photo can be included. Plant site Work orders.

Jack mentioned 2017 being the UM’s 200th Anniversary and the idea that we should do something special about disability “first’s,” and perhaps show a movie about Christopher Rush?
